Charles Perkins (He/Him)

Featherfist

Charles is a veteran who served 9 months in Frankfurt, Germany before suffering a knee injury. Since then, Featherfist has been assisting Charles and his partner by getting them out of shelters and into a new apartment. He has a passion for art, cooking, and is excited to move onto the next phase of his life!

"I got connected to Featherfist through the VA program. I’m a veteran. [I served] 9 months in Frankfurt before my injury in 1977. I enjoyed my service there. Then when I came out, Featherfist helped me further my education with computer classes and place me in a home. […] There’s so many things [we’re excited for]. We got our own security now, we got our own heating system, it’s a nice two bedroom - Just living. ”

“I love art! I have to have pictures in my house. I can’t stare at empty walls. It could be a chicken sitting on a nest, I don’t care, it has to be in my house.”

- Charles P.

“They’ve [Charles and his partner] been really great to work with. At our agency we do have employment readiness departments, so [Charles] has been connected with that. And now they finally got their place after being in emergency housing assistance for 2 months.”

-Natasha, Caseworker at Featherfist

About Featherfist:

For 35 years, Featherfist has brought power and purpose to the homeless community in Chicago. They go above and beyond to eliminate the cycle of homelessness by addressing the specific demands of each person or family with empathy and respect. They believe everyone should have a home, not “housing,” and the opportunity to re-enter the mainstream as a member of our society.

“I’m really thrilled with everything you’ve been showing me today. Thank you so much. This is beyond what I could’ve imagined.”
