H.O.W - Housing Opportunities for Women

After a fire took Jennifer’s apartment, she was at a loss for what to do next. She then got connected to H.O.W. and has been working with them for the past year to get back on her feet. With her new goal of becoming self-sufficient, Jennifer is no longer letting her circumstances and hearing disability be obstacles to her!

“I was in a long term relationship for 13 years and then the person I was with passed away. I had an apartment, but then that caught on fire. For a minute I thought [everyone] just forgot about me. But then, I reached out to heartland alliance, who reached out to [H.O.W.], and that’s how I got connected to Ana. She’s awesome. She checks in and makes sure I’m happy. What [H.O.W.] says they’ll do, they do.”

“I like my new place! The big green couch looks nice in my living room. It’s a one bedroom; I had a studio before, so it’s a step up. Central air, so, ‘heyyy!’ [Laughs] I’m telling you.”

“I’ve been [Jennifer’s] caseworker for about 3 months. She’s one of my favorites! She definitely is respectful, she’s very grateful to us, and for the furniture program today. […] It just makes me happy that people donate instead of just throwing things away and throwing them in landfills and stuff. And then they get a second use because it’s all in really good condition!"

ABOUT HOUSING OPPORTUNITIES FOR WOMEN:

Since 1983, HOW has been a leader in permanent solutions to homelessness. Through prevention strategies; expanded, affordable, supportive housing; and individualized support services we have helped thousands take back their lives. HOW operates under the Housing First Model, which ensures that individuals experiencing homelessness are housed as quickly as possible, and then provided with tools for success and self-sufficiency.

"I’m really excited. I mean, I appreciate everything because this is hard. You know? Especially when I’m living month to month. I’m just trying to do anything I can to reach higher, so thank you for all your help.”
