La Casa Norte

Shalonda is a single mother and nursing student who was suffering from homelessness - until she entered a lottery with All Chicago. Now, she's partnered with La Casa Norte to find an apartment for her family and pursue her education without worry!

“I had just got out of a divorce. Being homeless, just trying to figure out my way through. It’s uh… it was a really hard time. Now, I’m pretty much just trying to finish school. Right now I’m in BNC for nursing, but I want to go all the way and get my PHD! So I got 12 years to go.”

“The [painting] I picked right there is for the bathroom. I need one for the kitchen, the living room, the bedroom, wherever. [Art] to me really brings out the home. I like to make sure my walls are also decorated.”

[Shalonda’s] great! She’s very vocal. She’ll let you know what she needs. She’s one of the clients we get that I can see […] will venture out to do their own thing. […] The first time I came in hear I was like a kid. I was like ‘WOW, I want something!’ It can be overwhelming for [our clients] at first, but [CFB]’s a great place to come and get all the furniture you need to maintain your home. And [my old clients] always call me and say ‘I can’t wait till you see my apartment!’ ”

“I’m living in Brighton Park now. It’s a nice neighborhood; very clean, all about family, and I like that. It’s already a nice apartment, but with all this new furniture, it’s going to make it even better.”
